About the Role

Data Engineer

Role Type: Permanent with Joan Technologies Ltd, Work in Client place
Location: Exeter, EX2 7HR — minimum 2 days per week on-site (mandatory)
Number of Positions: 1

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer to join a programme supporting an asset-centric organisation in the water utilities sector. This is a hands-on delivery role spanning the full project lifecycle — from initiation through to go-live — and requires someone comfortable working across multiple projects in parallel. The role sits within a UK-based team and requires strong day-to-day collaboration with local stakeholders, so a good understanding of British working culture and communication style is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and integration solutions supporting asset management systems and reporting needs.
  • Work across the full project lifecycle — from requirements/initiation through design, build, testing, and delivery/go-live.
  • Support multiple concurrent projects/workstreams, prioritising effectively across delivery timelines.
  • Collaborate closely with Business Analysts, Solution Architects, and client stakeholders to translate business/asset data requirements into technical solutions.
  • Ensure data quality, governance, and lineage standards are maintained across pipelines.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and support knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and client-facing discussions as required.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer, having delivered projects end-to-end (initiation to delivery).
  • Strong hands-on experience with data pipeline development, ETL/ELT tools, and data modelling.
  • Domain understanding of asset-centric organisations (e.g., utilities, infrastructure, facilities-heavy industries) — water utilities experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of British workplace culture and communication norms, given close day-to-day interaction with UK-based client teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Must be able to commute to Exeter (EX2 7HR) at least 2 days per week.

Desirable

  • Experience with asset management platforms (e.g., Maximo, SAP PM, or similar).
  • Familiarity in water utilities or other asset-heavy/asset-centric industries (energy, rail, telecoms infrastructure) will be highly regarded.
  • Cloud data platform experience (Azure/AWS/GCP).
